At the center of the enchanting rolling fields, resided a boy named Shepherd. His being was essentially pure, simple yet virtuous. His main role was essentially to tend to his herd of sheep.

Their low murmuring and the whispering of the gales through the lone tree on the hilltop were his constant companions. Day in day, looking out for his responsibilities inculcated in him a notion of quiet fulfillment.

But, there were occasional moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would pine for companionship. On one such day because of sheer boredom, the shepherd boy orchestrated a naughty scheme.

Tales of predators hunting on sheep had long been circulating in the village. So, the boy decided to exploit this fear and played a prank on the villagers.

One afternoon he dashed into the village yelling “Wolf! A wolf is that has taken my sheep!” The frightened villagers rushed up the hills for rescue but saw nothing threatening.

The boy laughed at the dilemma on their faces. This trick continued for a few more days. However, one morning, a real wolf did come to prey the herd. The shepherd boy raced for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.

Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but could rescue only few of his flock. Devastated, he returned to the town only to be met with a reprimand on honesty and the results of dishonesty.

The story of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the significance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the perils of crying wolf. Moreover, it stresses how trust once violated, is tough to reclaim. It's read more a story as relevant today as it was then.
